ABSTRACT

Teniente Converter technology is presently one of the proven technologies for copper smelting into white metal. Developed years ago by excellent Chilean engineers it is today a successful competitive technology that has several advantages compared to other copper smelting technologies. However, as it was the case with other existing smelting technologies in the world, there is presently only a very limited work carried out on control and optimization of operation practices of this vessel and especially that on magnetite, solids build-up and accretions in this furnace. As it is the case with other technologies, this was normal and justifiable in the beginning during the development of this technology. However in the today's new reality where the need to increase the efficiency and productivity and to minimize of utilization of energy are standard requirements in the smelter this aspect has become indispensable. In this paper a review of some advantaged that Teniente Converter technology offers compared to other existing technologies it is first given. Then, the recent extensive work carried out on the control and optimization of the operation practices of Teniente Converter is overviewed especially in terms of the control of magnetite problems, solid build up and accretions. Several practical examples are given to illustrate the controlling and optimization techniques.
